My neighbor said to me yesterday that he had a secret about another neighbor. OH MY!!! I love secrets. I am pretty open about the fact that I can’t keep them. I always warn people of this. I can keep a secret about a gift someone is getting because I love presents even more than secrets, so at least I am okay there. But anything else…nope. I never keep a secret. Hubby Basset first, then my friend Rachael. After that it goes in the order I see people. Very VERY unfortunately for me, he wouldn’t tell me the secret. He never had any intention of telling me the secret. Why mention it if you wont tell me? The more I thought about it (and I thought about it a lot) the crazier I got. He told me its a good secret to. Something quite pleasant. The best kind of secret. Happy secrets are great, bad secrets leave you kinda dark. Now I am really going crazy.

Drive, Ride, Repeat: The Mostly-True Account of a Cross-Country Car and Bicycle Adventure
Al Macy
4.4 Stars (23 Reviews)
Genre: Sports & Outdoors

FREE for a limited time

Author Al Macy is a character and a tightwad with a unique sense of humor. He and his wife squirreled away enough money to retire early, do interesting things, and take unusual trips. As he puts it:

“Every day I wake up with nothing to do, and by the end of the day, I’ve only gotten half of it done.”

During his working life, Macy was a neuroscientist, computer game programmer, jazz trombonist, chef, CEO, piano player, clam digger, and technical writer.

The book is a journal of a car/bicycle/camping trip from California to St. Louis and back, but Macy promises that “if it starts sounding like one of your brother-in-law’s boring slide shows, I will stop this book, and we’ll turn around and go home. I mean it.”

Interspersed with the journal chapters, you’ll find thought-provoking life tips, stories from the past, and descriptions of Al’s wacky inventions. You’ll hear poignant anecdotes about what happened when doctors discovered a golf-ball-sized tumor in his wife’s brain and how everything they owned burned.

“Though we were four years younger than Ariya, we’d watched teenagers before at an older cousin’s house. They talked on the phone, they texted their boyfriends, they watched movies on DVDs. Sometimes, they tidied up the house by wiping the table with a damp sponge after feeding us, removing the crumbs and ring spots from the bottom of our glasses. But we’d never seen any of them work like Ariya did.”

Twin sisters. Stepdaughters. Neighbors. In this short fiction, the lives of the twins are forever changed when their mother remarries and they move next door to a family unlike their own. Could their lives have been different with a flip of a coin?
