Every day my baby bassets announce how many days we have left until Christmas. A fun and exciting announcement for them, but a daily reminder of how much I need to panic. “Only 9 more days until CHRISTMAS!” They bounce with anticipation, I sweat with perspiration. It seems like a cruel form of torture that is by no means new. I did the same thing to my parents, and I had no clue as well how much it freaked them out. Every day I tell myself, this is the day I will finish everything I need to do and I will enjoy the rest of the season. Then I don’t finish anything, and I repeat the promise to myself the next day after the daily announcement. It is no wonder I am usually asleep by 9 pm on New Years Eve.

In My Brother’s Shadow is an absorbing and skilful story, exploring the attitudes of a younger brother who has grown up overawed by the image of his elder brother. In his attempt to break away from a monotonous middle-class lifestyle the main hero goes on pilgrimage to Bosnia and Serbia to explore the land that took his brother’s life. Events in Serbia take him to the cold and imperial beauty of St. Petersburg, Russia, where events force him to re-examine the basis of his morality, the nature of war and peace, love and hate, and violence and submission. It explores the motivations behind these and how ordinary people can be pushed to do the unthinkable. In my Brother’s Shadow explores the relationship of two brothers and how actions can be defined by their environment.
