I wonder if chickens hate laying eggs every day. I looks like it would really be a bother to have to give birth every single day for most of your life. Maybe that’s why I spoil them so much with treats of crickets. Guilt.

The Ptorrigan Lode
Kathryn Lance
4.2 Stars (19 Reviews)
Genre: Science Fiction

FREE for a limited time

By the award-winning author of Pandora’s Genes, a tale of betrayal and revenge in the asteroid belt.

Somewhere in the asteroid belt, at an outpost called Onstation, The Corporation controls all. Its female employees are required to drape themselves in the modest Muslim garment, the chador. And two brothers—Jay, a musician, and Von, The Corporation’s OnStation Director—are rivals for the love of one woman.

This is the premise for The Ptorrigan Lode, a worthy successor to Kathryn Lance’s 1980s cult classic Pandora’s Genes. Jay, the musician, is addicted to chappa, a drug, associated with a now-extinct civilization, that increases creativity—among other things. Like most addictive substances, chappa eventually destroys those with a dependence on it.

Jay will die without his chappa fix, but The Corporation has made chappa illegal. Von offers him a way to get all the chappa he might ever need, and get his life back in the process, but there’s a catch. More than one.

The Ptorrigan Lode keeps you at the edge of your seat and keeps you guessing all the while. It’s a quick read, but a satisfying one, that will nevertheless leave you hungry for more. In that case, I can recommend Lance’s earlier works, which are eerily relevant to much going on in our culture today.

Rooftop Soliloquy
Roman Payne
4.3 Stars (13 Reviews)
Genre: Contemporary Fiction | Urban

FREE for a limited time

Written entirely in Paris over a two year span during which its author lived every conceivable metropolitan passion and inspiration, Rooftop Soliloquy is a novel as vibrant and alive as the city where it was given seed and a place to grow. The first-person narrative follows the adventures and misadventures of a mysterious individual: an artist, flaneur, composer of operas, and incorrigible rake, who wanders the districts of Paris seducing girls, drinking wine, and looking for that new idea with which to complete his ‘hero’s tale.’ Rooftop Soliloquy is remarkable for the ease and pleasurable pace of the story. The reader is led on a joyful path that wanders from the urban picaresque tale, to the pastoral courtly or chivalric romance, to the Homeric-style epic.
