Now the new chickens are being a bad influence my original four. I am happy that they are are getting along now and know exactly where they sit in the pecking order, but I was hoping my original ladies would lead, not follow. They follow the new chickens to my poor pups yard and tear it up. They also now jump on top of their run and move the cloth all over the place taking away the much needed shade. It’s like I have a bunch of teenagers running all over the place just being naughty to be naughty! I’m just leaving them in the run today. I can’t handle their antics. Maybe after another cup of coffee I will let them out… or not. NAUGHTY CHICKENS!!!

The House of Baric Part One: Shields Down
Jillian Bald
(11 Reviews)
Genre: Literary Fiction | Historical Fiction
FREE for a limited time
Part Masterpiece Theatre-style storytelling / part 17th century soap opera, “The House of Baric” is a saga about a noble family living in the Venetian Empire in 1649. It is one continuous story, told over three books, following the cast of characters from colonial Croatia, to the Empire’s capital of Venice, and to the Ottoman lands and beyond. It is an entertaining tale that mostly happens in the course of just seven short months. “Part One: Shields Down” introduces you to the Barics and the residents at their castle during one pivotal summer when their preordained roles in life collide with their growing desires for different futures. You are a fly-on-the-wall as this character-driven tale unpeels like an onion. Baron Mauro Baric, his Ottoman wife, Resi, and their best friends Fabian, Ruby, and Jero are at the core of this story of love, war, hating, and mating. In “Shields Down”, their adventures begin modestly. Having just lived through the Thirty Years’ War, they want to stay home for a while. This first book in the trilogy focuses on the many characters, their relationships with each other, and their places in their confined, scripted world. The Venetians of the baroque period were an immodest, decadent group, so prepare for some scandalous romance and frank discussions. If you want a story with double agents, car chases, alien invasions, zombies, or ax murders in the basement, you won’t read it here. This first book is a saga about people, their loves and losses, and happiness and triumphs. There is humor, lots of romance, and “old-school” Tom Sawyer-esque action and adventures that fill the pages, along with the many likeable characters that you will find yourself rooting for.

She barely recognizes the warrior who returns to their small town, an ex-military, multi-decorated hero with pain in his eyes. But the battle between them has just begun. A takeover bid is pending for the local paper mill. Camilla swears to stop the sale, rallying the town behind her on environmental issues. Reid, as operating owner, is concerned for the workers. Added to the mix is Camilla’s almost ex-husband who wants her back–mainly because he believes a loophole in the law may make her the beneficiary of millions from the buyout. But hate and love are close kin, and daytime combat between Reid and Camilla gives way to nighttime desire. That is, until Camilla’s estranged husband turns up dead. As the town erupts with gossip about the convenience of his passing, she and Reid are faced with a choice. They can join forces to unmask the killer–or allow the murderer to drive them apart forever.

As Michael drifts through the shadows, encountering stuttering and broken Facility technology, he attempts to figure out why he has been dispatched here and what his mission truly is. Yet before he knows what’s happening, he is fighting for his life. With his personal gear malfunctioning, Bishop stands against foes familiar to him, Assets that have been transformed into inhuman abominations. As time runs out, he finds his way to his cadre, and they fight their way to the depths of the mysterious Spire. There, they discover remnants of a lost, broken, carnage-filled world. As Michael and his cadre stand against the inhabitants of an entire world of bloody ruin, he is forced to face a painful truth. It is possible that this dossier will be his last… A Myriad of Worlds…
This story is the third in the series, The Dossiers of Asset 108, regarding the adventures and trials of Michael Bishop, a man who does not know his nature. It is a story of a shadowed world, a world where creatures of outer darkness are hunted by a faceless organization, the Facility. This series is itself a strand in The Paean of Sundered Dreams, is a multi-genre, universe-spanning array of tales with Lovecraftian themes. Some of the strands of this work are science fiction, some fantasy, and some steampunk, but they share the same horrific universe. They weft and weave together, each leaving breadcrumbs of clues for the next story. Each tale echoes a beating heart of darkness, cackling quietly in the shadows of existence. These stories may be enjoyed as individual series or as part of the Paean in its proper order.
