I did the walk of shame this morning, but not quite like the college kids do on Sunday morning. No, it was a mom style walk of shame through my living room with all my goodies from my yearly pilgrimage to IKEA. I really didn’t need most of this stuff. Hubby would argue I didn’t need any of it, but he always says that. He can’t be right 100% of the time, so I hold out hope I needed some of it. A numbers game if you will. I got hubby a HUGE soft pillow, so he was slightly happy about that and judged me a little less… I think.
The Draycott Murder Mystery: A Golden Age Mystery

There was something about those hands, with their strangely crisped fingers, as though they had been arrested in the very act of closing, that somehow gave the lie to the woman’s attitude of sleep. A howling gale… A lonely farmhouse… the tread of a mysterious stranger… and then the corpse of a beautiful blonde, seemingly stopped in the act of writing. This is all a bit much for local bobby PC Gunnet, especially when it seems the dead – and aristocratic – woman shouldn’t even have been there in the first place. But nonetheless the owner of the farm, John Leslie, is convicted, and his guilt looks certain. Certain, that is, until the eccentric Allen “Hatter” Fayre, an old India hand, begins to look more deeply into the case and discovers more than one rival suspect in this classic and satisfying puzzler. The Draycott Murder Mystery, a whodunit hinging enigmatically on the evidence of a fountain pen, was first published in 1928. This new edition, the first for many decades, includes a new introduction by crime fiction historian Curtis Evans.

“He looked out towards the headland, counting past the six smaller waves that would follow, waiting for the seventh. And when he saw it begin to rise, the fear in him prevented him from moving. Thomas Broderick stood on the top of Sgeir Ghlas and waited for the wall of water to come, and it came slowly, curling like the fingers of a claw, rising up until he could not see beyond it. His last thought before the wave snatched him from the island was that he had seen perfection.” Iain Broderick is growing up in Inverdaig, a remote village on the West Coast of Scotland. His father is long dead, and a man he calls Uncle lives with his mother, but the history of his family is never discussed. The mysterious old Norseman who lives in a cottage at the end of the village begins to tell Iain amazing stories, and as their relationship grows, Iain comes to find out more of the old Norseman’s history too. This takes Iain on a journey of discovery across Europe, tracing the origins of the fantastic tales, where he finds new truths that change the old man’s life.
