I am happy to say that all seems to be well with my little guinea pigs. My eyesight isn’t what it used to be, and I can’t tell if Henry lost a finger or just a claw. If something grows back I will know. I have never liked drama and when my sweet chickies or guinea pigs bicker it always stresses me out. Thankfully the ladies have been together long enough that any bickering is short lived and usually just a quick reminder of who is in charge. Although right now Jackie is molting, so a naked Jackie is a vulnerable Jackie. Summer takes this opportunity to step up and be in charge for a week or so. I think she enjoys it. She seems to walk taller.

“This was a WONDERFUL READ from start to finish! I started it at bedtime and figured it would help me fall asleep, but instead I stayed up all night finishing the book & didn’t get any sleep at all. The characters descriptions & aspects of their personalities are sprinkled throughout the book, yet I have a perfect full picture of each one in my mind (I just love Pearlie & her spunk)! The plot/mysteries had me guessing & sometimes clueless. It’s definitely NOT one of those books where 50 pages in you know “whodunnit” & then spend the next 200 trudging through what you already knew.” By Karmela C Lyman, Amazon

Baklava, Biscotti, and an Irishman: a novel
by Kathy Aspden
(14 Reviews)
Genre: Contemporary Fiction | Women’s Fiction
FREE for a limited time
Artfully weaving together three lives, three coasts and three generations, Kathy Aspden’s breathtaking debut, Baklava, Biscotti, and an Irishman is a dazzling pastiche of love, deception, acceptance and forgiveness.
When the choices that Teressa, Danny and Gregory make intersect with circumstances out of their control, they must straddle the fine line between what is right and what is unimaginable to live without – each asking “What would I do for the sake of a child?” It is a deeply moving story about the dynamics of love and loss, and what it takes to survive both.
Baklava, Biscotti, and an Irishman is the perfect blend of love, lies, devotion, compromise and loyalty, trussed together on three shores: Nea Makri Greece, Sorrento Italy and the Massachusetts coastline. With an historical backdrop seen through the eyes of its characters, Baklava, Biscotti, and an Irishman takes us from visions of the Ottoman Empire in Greece and post-World War II Italy, then lands us in the beautiful seaside town of Scituate, Massachusetts with a love story that will leave you wanting more.
“There is a phenomenon that happens when two people meet. It’s the moment when their futures become set. One soul, with a pre-planned agenda, recognizes another soul, with its own agenda, and remembers exactly how they were meant to fit into each other’s lives. Nothing can be done to take back that tiny millisecond when one soul recognizes another. It was like that. It was that rapid, that breathtaking, that devastating. And it was too late. His soul had recognized hers and there was no turning back.”

Gunman’s Reckoning
by Max Brand
(31 Reviews)
Genre: Westerns | Classics
FREE for a limited time
A gunman agrees to do a rich man’s dirty work in this classic Western from one of the genre’s early masters
Donnegan is not proud of his past. But when words ran dry and matters could only be settled with a gun, he never hesitated to make things right. Now fate has led him to The Corner, a wide-open gold-mining town in the valley where two rivers join. An invalid by the name of Colonel Macon wants Donnegan to settle a long-standing land claim that’s been taken over by outlaws. Charmed by the colonel’s beautiful daughter, the gunman agrees. But nothing is as it seems in The Corner, where the line separating good from evil is so badly blurred it might not be there at all.
A contemporary of Zane Grey and a major influence on Louis L’Amour, Max Brand was a true master of the Western. Gunman’s Reckoning is a fine example of the moral complexity, fluid prose, and nonstop action that defines the best of his work.
