I can tell you with the upmost confidence that there are six little chickens who think I am the most awesome human in the world. This morning when I opened the coop, they were given access to a run that was ten times bigger and taller than their previous run. The drawback is it doesn’t have protection overhead, so they are a little more vulnerable to hawks, but they do have the cover of a tree to shelter them a bit. Plus now all the mud is gone and it smells so much better. Before I took the smaller run out, I was thinking I might have to stop having chickens and let these guys be the last ones I get. Now I could get more if I wanted. I won’t though. These six ladies get along so well I just don’t want to disrupt their happy little family this late in life. Jackie, Summer, and Heather are all up there in years and they deserve a good life. I am surprised though that Jackie is still laying pretty darn good. In fact everyone is laying except for Summer and Heather. I wasn’t expecting any eggs until the Spring.

From the author of the popular Maternal Harbor comes Harbored Secrets (a psycholgical mystery in the unearthing of family secrets.)

In May of 1935, Blinny Platt’s homestead shack burns to the ground forever leaving her family asunder, scattering them like the embers flew on the Montana wind. She was only eight-years-old, sent away and in charge of her little sister. She could handle that because Platts take care of Platts.

However, it is the hidden secrets of her parents smoldering beneath the charred remains that haunts Blinny until 1982. She once again leaves the home place to build a house for herself. As the foundation is poured and the walls go up, each of the hurtful memories are uncovered. Finally the mystery, left in the ashes of the burned home, is revealed. How could her mother do what she did?

MIA

Jay Bradshaw. My boyfriend’s best friend.

He was never supposed to be anything more — until he was.

When my college boyfriend betrayed me and left, breaking my heart, Jay picked a side. He chose me. He stayed, and for the past six years, he’s been my rock, my anchor, my compass…

Now we’ve grown up, finished school, and have careers. Me as a nurse practitioner; Jay as a doctor. He’s been everything I needed, but now I want more. I can’t stop thinking about him, and I’m done hiding it.

It’s time to find out if he wants me, too.

JAY

A friend. Not a lover. That’s who Mia Waters is to me.

I’ve tried damn hard to make sure our relationship stays that way. I’m the shoulder she leans on, the last one to talk to her before she goes to sleep at night… And after six years, she means more to me than my own family.

The moment I met her, I wanted her. But she belonged to someone else, so I pushed the need down. I didn’t take what I wanted. I’m not that guy. Her happiness meant more.

Until now. Until she asks me a question that shatters our unspoken boundaries. “Have you ever thought about having sex with me?” Six years of keeping her at arm’s length, and I can feel myself starting to give in and lose control with her.

I can’t let it happen. There are reasons I didn’t get close. She hasn’t let go of her ex-boyfriend, not really. And she has no idea about the lies I’ve told her.

What if she finds out about me? What if she finds out who I really am?

And what will she do when I leave?

Lots of girls play Fairy Princess when they’re little. Megan O’Reilly had no idea the real thing was like playing chess, guitar, and hockey all at once. Megan had known for a long time that she wasn’t an entirely typical girl. But living with ADHD — and her mother’s obsessions — was a very different thing from finding out she wasn’t entirely human. Somewhere out there, in a completely different world, her father needs help. There’s a conflict, revolving around Faerie seasonal rituals, that could have consequences for humanity — and if Megan’s getting the terminology straight, it sounds like her family aren’t even supposed to be the good guys. As she’s further and further swept up in trying to save her father, Megan may be getting too good at not being human.

Look at My Happy Rainbow: My Journey as a Male Kindergarten Teacher
by Matthew Halpern
4.8 Stars (93 Reviews)
Genre: Education & Teaching | Nonfiction

FREE for a limited time

What would a kindergartner write about me? Probably something like: Mr. Halpern is funny. He is handsome. He likes to laugh. I love Mr. Halpern. How can I top that? Who doesn’t want to be funny, handsome, laugh all the time, and be loved by their students? What they don’t know is I left a dreary cubicle job for the exciting, never boring life of a kindergarten teacher eight years ago and never looked back. I have seen and heard some crazy, hilarious, and even touching moments. Look at My Happy Rainbow is my account of the first few years working in a kindergarten classroom experiencing the day to day trials and tribulations and trying to see the world a little more through the eyes of a five-year-old. From the first time a child reached up to take my hand to learning the true value of zipping a coat, being a ‘rooster in a world of hens’ my unique perspective on teaching and children will (hopefully) warm your heart, make you laugh, and might even help you remember what it felt like to be in kindergarten.

Warning: I have a very short attention span (this is why I’m so well suited to teach kindergarten). Some of the chapters are short. One is less than one page. I think this makes the book ‘charming’, but please know – this is not War and Peace.
