Yesterday was my birthday and I had spent it exactly how I would like to. We celebrated with family and friends the night before, so my actual birthday was a day of rest and relaxation. I spent most of the day lounging on the couch watching gardening shows and eating cake. Giving myself permission to eat as much cake as I wanted all day Sunday has made it really easy for me to not have any cake today. In fact, I don’t want to see another piece of cake ever again. And by that I mean at least a few weeks, when it is my youngest baby basset’s birthday!

Theirs is a friendship that can talk any life sorrow into a comic tragedy, and now that the racial divide in the Deep South has evolved, Celia wonders if friendship can triumph over history.
