A friend of mine made a comment that I thought was completely false. About my new (used) car he said, “She probably won’t drive it” I thought he was completely wrong! Why wouldn’t I drive my new car? It’s cute, fun to drive, and it’s not the soul sucking minivan. Well, as you guys know the minivan died on Sunday, and we can’t get it fixed for a few weeks. Now here I am on Thursday and I have only driven once this week. I am finding every excuse in the world not to drive the new car and I have no idea why. It could be because I have yet to figure out all the buttons. I am the same way with a new phone. So many buttons! Sometime today I will sit in it and watch YouTube videos about my car. Why would I rad the manual when I can just watch a YouTube video? Maybe if they made those manuals more exciting I would read them. Where’s the action? Where’s the romance??

Nell lived all her life in the Townsend Orphan Home and at thirteen; she faced a difficult decision. Move to yet another Orphan home, one that had a poor reputation, or set out on her own with all the supplies she could gather before the day the home closed for good.
Two of the younger children that she befriended decided that if Nell was not going to the new home, neither would they. After barely escaping on the last day, the threesome started their new life with a mule, cow, and wagon full of supplies. The three orphaned children became a family as they traveled west looking for someplace to call home.
During their journey, they met a man that continued to show up when they needed moral support. Uncle Ned, as they called him, became their biggest encouragement, especially when Nell learned that Lonny and Frieda had a real uncle that had been looking for them.
After losing her two children, Uncle Ned was determined to build a real house for Nell, not the stable turned house they had been living in after moving from the old sod house. Uncle Ned arranged the trade of Nell’s standing hardwood trees for buildable wood. After her house was finished, Uncle Ned continued on his travels leaving Nell to settle into single living.
Bert Stein was the only son of the saw-mill owner in town and led the crew that continued to cut old hardwood trees from Nell’s land. Being tongue-tied around women, Bert appreciated Nell from afar until his mother sent him to Nell’s ranch with the puppy she promised.
That was the beginning of their transformation, and took them places they did not expect.

Portugal’s rich and vibrant culture is undeniably felt in its cuisine. Portuguese dishes are never shy. Each dish proudly presents itself with fresh, robust, and surprising flavors. There is something both comforting and celebratory about Portuguese dishes. Hearty soups and stews are warm and nourishing. With olive oil, one must be extravagant; with meat, nothing is to be put to waste. Desserts are divine, their flavors and preparation seeming to resound with good times and happy memories. Traditional recipes have mostly been passed down from mothers to daughters, with no measurements. The Portuguese are innovative and creative people, and their recipes and methods vary from family to family and from region to region. What one family may consider authentic may seem foreign to another. With that in mind, the recipes in this cookbook do not claim to be authentic. They are here to give you at least a glimpse of Portugal’s gastronomy, to let you taste the flavors dear to its people, and to feel its rustic charms. In this collection of classic Portuguese recipes, it is hoped that you will experience the passion and simplicity of Portuguese cooking. Something as simple as using real Portuguese olive oil, sea salt, coarse-ground pepper, and only the freshest ingredients will help you understand why Portuguese food is considered some of the best in the world.
