I have a song stuck in my head. Knowing what I know now about that song makes me laugh. I’m going to date myself right now, but get this. I went to a private catholic high school that was about 35 minutes away. One of the Sisters lived close to a few of the students, so we carpooled with her. Every morning she would pick up the other three students, and I was the last to cram into her teenie tiny Toyota Tercel. It was a tight fit, but way better than taking the public bus. All smooshed in we would fly through the streets and onto the highway, weaving in-between cars in an almost manic fashion. It was hard to feel scared though because it was a nun driving and we surly had God on our side. We still clung to whatever we could get our hands on. I am certain we would catch a bit of air occasionally and didn’t want to end up in anyone’s lap. A ridiculous notions since, as I said before, we were crammed in like sardines. Anywho, the song I had stuck in my head is one that would come up on the radio ever single day. It was the most popular song at the time. We all sang it at the top of our lungs, including the Sister. I had no idea what it was about. I just learned that bit of information a year or so ago. The song? Madonna’s “Like A Virgin.”

‘THE MOST SAVAGE OF BEASTS IS TO BE FOUND WITHIN THE HEART OF MAN.’

It is 1817, Regency England. Thomas Blackdown, a thieftaker and ex-soldier, receives word that his brother and father are in deep trouble and need his help. But Blackdown is a man that harbours bitter memories; a man banished from his homeland because of a terrible accident, and so is reluctant to return to his ancestral home in Somerset.

However, once there he discovers that his brother has been savagely murdered – torn to shreds, some say by a mythical creature the locals call the Blackdown Beast. Thomas Blackdown does not believe in any creature of fantasy, and is determined to bring to justice his brother’s murderer, encouraged by his brother’s fiancé, Julianne Tresham, and aided by the faithful servant Addison.

But Blackdown is quickly drawn deep into a complicated web of deceit, power, greed and murder involving Lord Tresham – Julianne’s father – and the cold Sir Peter Lansdowne. What is the mysterious Lupercal Club? Why do ex-soldiers go missing from Commodore Pettigrew’s travelling theatre? What strange thing is happening in Devilbowl Wood where Blackdown’s brother was found mutilated? And does a savage, hellish creature really prowl the night?

Soon, Blackdown must fight for his own life and face up to his demons both imaginary and real. He will need all his wits and skills to survive if he is ever to discover the shocking truth behind the evil that has penetrated as far as the government itself.

Set in Regency England following the end of the Napoleonic wars, ‘Blackdown’ is D. M. Mitchell at his creative best, crafting a thoroughly researched, believable world of strange, larger-than-life characters, with his trademark intricate plotting and surprise ending, it is a novel that is a rollicking good thriller, horror and adventure story rolled into one.

And in Thomas Blackdown, Mitchell has given us a hero like no other before – a Darcy with bite, a Bond in breeches…

He’s a disgraced Star Corps pilot with a robot partner fresh off the junk heap. She’s a runaway with no future. And they’re the good guys.

Since being dishonorably discharged from the Star Corps, pilot John MacAlister has struggled to make ends meet with less-than-legal cargo runs across the cosmos. He’s desperate to get his life back, but every time John thinks he’s found that “one last job,” some new disaster lands him back at square one.

After an ill-fated smuggling run ends with a disastrous crash landing on the moon (and an even more disastrous landing in the local lunar lockup), John is offered a choice: rot in a Galactic Union prison forever or locate a teenage runaway named Ril and bring her back to the authorities.

It seems like an easy decision — until John actually meets Ril, and discovers the scrappy teen isn’t just a runaway; she’s the only witness to a murder. And the killer? Why, none other than the very man who got John kicked out of the Star Corps: Captain James Kedron, a ruthless, power-hungry officer who will stop at nothing to silence Ril forever.

For the first time since his dishonorable discharge, John has a purpose. Despite facing impossible odds, he vows to protect Ril and expose his former commander’s corruption no matter the cost.

The only challenge? Living long enough to actually do it.

A new DFZ series from the author of NICE DRAGONS FINISH LAST and MINIMUM WAGE MAGIC, now complete at three books!

In the world’s most magical metropolis where spirits run noodle shops and cash-strapped dragons stage photo-ops for tourists, people still think fairies are nothing but stories, and that’s exactly how the fairies like it. It’s a lot easier to feast on humanity’s dreams when no one believes you exist. But while this arrangement works splendidly for most fair folk, Lola isn’t one of the lucky ones.

She’s a changeling, a fairy monster made just human enough to dupe unsuspecting parents while fairies steal their real child. The magic that sustains her was never meant to last past the initial theft, leaving Lola without a future. But thanks to Victor Conrath, a very powerful–and very illegal–blood mage, she was given the means to cheat death.

For a price.

Now the only changeling ever to make it to adulthood, Lola has served the blood mage faithfully, if reluctantly, for twenty years. Her unique ability to slip through wards and change her shape to look like anyone has helped make Victor a legend in the DFZ’s illegal-magic underground. It’s not a great life, but at least the work is stable… until her master vanishes without a trace.

With only a handful left of the pills that keep her human, Lola must find Victor before she turns back into the fairy monster she was always meant to be. But with a whole SWAT team of federal paladins hunting her as a blood-mage accomplice, an Urban Legend on a silent black motorcycle who won’t leave her alone, and a mysterious fairy king with the power to make the entire city dream, Lola’s chances of getting out of this alive are as slender as a silver thread.
