Defiance
by Titia Bozuwa
4.6 Stars (360 Reviews)
Genre: War

FREE for a limited time

Eight dutch students outwit the Nazis to save their friends.

When the German war machine rolled over the Netherlands in May 1940, Titia Wetselaar Bozuwa was an eight-year-old girl living in the southern city of Breda. She wrote about her family’s endurance of that five-year Occupation in her memoir, In the Shadow of the Cathedral. In Defiance, her first work of fiction, she pays tribute to the many who defied the German Occupation.

Challenging the expectations of Dutch society, Anna Smits enrolls as a medical student at Utrecht University. But in a country occupied by Nazi Germany, student life is not what Anna expected. Social clubs are closed; Jews are forbidden from attending schools; and in 1943, students are ordered to sign a declaration of loyalty to the occupying German government. Anna and her seven closest friends — the Group of Eight — refuse to sign.

Inspired by a sermon about the Good Samaritan — a sermon that got the minister thrown into prison — the Group of Eight vows to help the victims of Hitler’s brutal regime. They hide Jews and provide them with fake IDs; they keep desperately needed medicines out of the hands of the Nazis; they raise funds for orphaned Jewish children. But as the war drags on and the Nazis’ hold tightens, the Group of Eight shrinks. The few that remain defiantly resist the ever-onerous Occupying force. But how can they fight the lawlessness with which the Germans shoot first and don’t bother with questions? How can they fight the devastating Hunger Winter of 1945?

Anna clings to her beliefs and mission, aided by her remarkable grandmother, Baroness van Haersolte, as the country waits for liberation. But will they all survive that long?

Seventy-four good old Texas dollars.” He held up a coin between his thumb and forefinger… ”

Adventures of Big-Foot Wallace: The Texas Ranger and Hunter (Illustrated)
by John Crittenden Duval
4.1 Stars (288 Reviews)
Genre: History | Biographies & Memoirs

The writer of this book is well aware that it will not stand the test of criticism as a literary production. A frontiersman himself, his opportunities for acquiring information, and for supplying the deficiencies of a rather limited education, have of course been “few and far between;” and therefore it cannot be reasonably expected that he could make a book under such circumstances which would not be sadly defective as to style and composition. However, it can justly lay claim to at least one merit, not often found in similar publications — it is not a compilation of imaginary scenes and incidents, concocted in the brain of one who never was beyond the sound of a dinner-bell in his life, but a plain, unvarnished story of the “‘scapes and scrapes” of Big-Foot Wallace, the Texas Ranger and Hunter, written out from notes furnished by himself, and told, as well as my memory serves me, in his own language.

Gun For Hire: A Michael Devlin Omnibus

Nothing To Lose.

Killing comes easy to Michael Devlin, a soldier turned assassin.

When he murders Martin Pound, a corrupt politician, he considers it to be just another job.

His days are spent drinking, reading and visiting his late wife’s grave. Devlin has nothing to live for.

Then he meets Emma, “a good Catholic girl”. Everyone deserves a second chance.

But the hunter is about to become the hunted.

The Parker brothers, the criminal family who put the hit out on the politician, want to tie-up loose ends.

Devlin must kill or be killed.

‘Nothing To Lose’ is a literary thriller, set in South London. Thomas Waugh has created a hero (or anti-hero) who will seem human to some readers and inhuman to others. You decide.

Darkness Visible

Michael Devlin, former soldier and contract killer, thought he had retired. He was wrong.

Rameen Jamal – the man who murdered and maimed his comrades in Helmand – is in London.

Devlin vows to kill again.

He decides to call upon the help of the fixer, Oliver Porter, to plan the hit at The Ritz hotel.

But not everything will go to plan.

‘Darkness Visible’ is a page-turning novella, in the vein of Graham Greene’s “entertainments” and Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels.

Ready For Anything

Killing isn’t good for the soul…

After the tragic shooting of a friend during his last job Michael Devlin promises to never draw his gun again.

But he is tracked down and blackmailed by Mason Talbot, a CIA agent stationed in London, into planning a hit on a prominent UK politician.

With the help of the fixer, Oliver Porter, Devlin must carry out the job – and somehow find a way to prevent himself from becoming one of Talbot’s assets.

The assassination goes ahead. But Talbot inhabits a world of smoke and mirrors. Not all goes according to plan.

Devlin will end up confronting his most formidable enemy of all, his conscience.

Thomas Waugh is the pseudonym of a bestselling historical novelist. His books have been widely praised.
