I know I say this every year, but this time I mean it. I am NOT going to plant milkweed in the garden to attract Monarch Butterflies anymore. It turns out that one that I saw fluttering from one milkweed to the next, was not laying eggs. Must have been a male. I have been searching everyday for eggs or baby caterpillars, and I have found exactly zero. What I do find every day is milkweed plants that are infested with aphids. The plants are completely covered with the gross little bugs and are dripping with some gross liquid. Once again I have spent a full summer with a flowerbed that is ugly and gross. NOPE. I am done done. This experiment is going to go the way of the pumpkins. It took me five years to figure out that I just didn’t have the space for pumpkins. I think I have been trying to attract Monarchs for four years, so I can confidently say I am learning faster now. I will still plant a few in pots in the side yard, but I am no longer dedicating a full bed to those ungrateful butterflies.  HMMPH!!
