I was so desperate for cake last night that I convinced my youngest basset that he wanted to play with his Easy Bake Oven. It took FOREVER for him to mix the little chocolate cake mix and bake it in the oven heated by a light bulb. Is it still heated by a little light bulb? Either way it took way too long. I could smell it cooking, drooling as I hovered over him like a cougar about to pounce. The microwave timer finally went off and my baby basset carefully pulled the tiny misshapen cake from the teenie tiny oven. In runs my oldest basset and he is overjoyed to see that he gets a piece of the little cake as well. Oh right…as a parent I have to teach sharing with others. DRAT!! You could have actually heard me growl.

Bottom-of-the-ninth dreams are the stuff that young boys are made of. But boys grow. Destiny arrives on the doorstep –or, more likely, fails to– and all the while mothers look on, impotent witnesses to the great unknown. Such is the turf of The Pitcher’s Mom, a novel about big dreams, cup shopping, bleacher barbs, sore arms, mothers and sons, wrestling destiny, and the sacrifices we make for love. Finally, a baseball book that captures the game—from Little League to the pros— from the mom’s point of view.
“Heather Davis has a much better insight into the whole baseball process than almost any of the parents I’ve known over the last 50+ years. If you’re a mom with a kid in the game, and you want to look at the big picture, “The Pitcher’s Mom” is the story you should be reading.”

A portrait of the artist as a young woman…
Helene vividly remembers that night in Prince George when her alcoholic mother threatened to leave. She also cannot forget the day her stepfather sent her away to a group home. Now, years later in Vancouver, she has met a man who can make her forget all that.
The God of My Art is layered with unforgettable scenes of youth, obsessive love, and artistic longing. At the core of this coming-of-age tale are the shifting faces of Helene–teenage runaway, university student, and budding artist. Related in her engaging voice, this novel chronicles Helene’s seminal love affair with Matthew, a globetrotting mountaineer passionate about Nietzsche, and the art he inspires within her. As she wrestles to become the artist she wants to be, she encounters unforgettable characters along the way, including Hana, a lesbian theatre student fed up with her partner’s multiple affairs, and Laurent, a French exchange student who grapples with existential questions of his own.
Bold and poetic, sensual and confessional, The God of My Art explores obsessive love as a source of inspiration for art, where the artist is female and the muse, male.

In 276 BC, Alexandria, Egypt is the most vibrant and influential city in the Mediterranean. But Egyptians are shocked when they discover Anubis, god of the dead, is killing men working on the Pharos Lighthouse. The evidence is inexplicable. He is there to attend the School of Alexandria and credits Athena, goddess of wisdom and war, for blessing him with the wisdom half of her powers. The pharaoh, desperate to get his lighthouse built, asks Archimedes to use his exceptional abilities to solve the crimes that only a vengeful god could commit and a12-year-old genius can unravel. But Archimedes believes the murderer is more corporeal than spiritual and has to tread carefully when he applies the cold logic of Greek science in a sultry, mystical world of Egyptian culture. When Archimedes uses an ancient Egyptian scroll to put him on the trail of the killer, he also finds another god returned from the dead. Now Archimedes is going to need Athena’s war skills.
