I did it. Yesterday I fully committed to giving up on attracting Monarch butterflies. It’s not that I am done with Monarchs. I love the guys. It’s the nasty aphid infested Milkweed that makes me so crazy. The milkweed in the backyard flowerbeds were completely covered in bugs, dripping with a nasty sticky ooz, and had black gunk all over them. Most of the milkweed was unaliving from the mess. It just looked terrible, so I yanked them all out. The mess was also causing a lot of the other plants to unalive as well. It was crazy how much damage was being done. I am really cutting back on the amount of plants I will have in the beds. This time I am going for the less is more kind of feeling. I still have a few milkweed plants in the back side yard, so if any Monarchs come around they have a little place to land, but I am no longer sacrificing such a huge chunk of my yard to them. Nope, I am now going to concentrate on Swallowtail Butterflies. SO PRETTY!
