January has been a long long month. Like… SUPER long. How many days did it have last year? 357? I think it was 357. This year there was certainly more than that. I’m thinking about 425. Hubby just corrected me. It was actually 413. I was close though. February is my favorite month because it’s my birthday month. Usually I am all  excited because I can ask for whatever gifts I didn’t get for Christmas. Problem is, I really don’t want anything. I’m going through another minimalist phase. This does not work well with my love of presents. Once again my brain is messing with me. My body is being nice though. It wants cake and it will happily accept it.

Everyone knows about Nostradamus.
No one knows about Philibert Montmorency.
One’s a legend. The other… not so much.
Marseille, 1561

Like the majority of people living in sixteenth century France, Philibert Montmorency is a peasant. Unlike most people, he’s pretending not to be one. Philibert is a conman, but a chance meeting with Nostradamus in a Marseille prison convinces him that being a prophet might be a better career move.

Lyon, Modern Day

Dr Ally Oldfield, renowned professor of medieval languages, has been summoned to Lyon to authenticate a newly discovered prophecy. She’s not happy about it but then again, she’s not happy about most things. As an expert in Nostradamus’s work, she’s convinced the new quatrain is a fake even if the evidence suggests it was written four hundred years ago. When the events it predicts become reality, Ally finds herself in a race against time to prove it’s a fraud.

As society breaks down fearing the end of the world, Ally must use the clues scattered through Lyon’s Renaissance history to work out who wrote the prophecy and why somebody else is responsible for the global chaos, but when Ally is framed for the murder of a rival historian she’s forced to rely on Gabrielle, a ditsy millennial prepper, and Antoine, a secretive aristocrat, to help her solve the mystery and save the world.

All Quiet on the Western Front
by Erich Maria Remarque, A. W. Wheen
4.8 Stars (362 Reviews)

The original US edition of the masterpiece of war literature depicting the plight of German soldiers during World War I — now an Oscar-nominated Netflix film

From the perspective of Paul Bäumer, a young German soldier in World War I, comes an unsettling tale of the mundanity and misery of trench warfare on the Western Front. When Paul and his comrades volunteer for the Imperial German Army, pressured into this act of patriotism by idealistic parents and a steely schoolmaster, they quickly learn that the authorities they trusted to shape their minds and guide their growth were condemning them to unimaginable danger and squalor, in the name of duty to an old world in its death throes.

Bombarded by shells and bombs, by horror after horror, Paul absorbs the sordid lessons of combat and reflects upon the strangers on the arbitrary other side, transformed into enemies by a distant “word of command.” With timeless insight and searing prose, Erich Maria Remarque draws readers into the embattled consciences of soldiers on the frontlines, enlivening a tragic story with characters whose survival one hopes for against all odds.
