I’m not sure if I should take it easy today or go full force and complete all the things I need to do. I remember Sundays used to be a day of rest. A lot of the stores were closed, and I remember wondering how my parents could spend so many hours reading the newspaper. Still don’t get that. There were now cat videos in those newspapers, so what was so interesting? I have two bowls of Lucky Charms to work off, so maybe a bit of laundry will do the trick.

THE EDGE OF DEATH Powerful creatures have long been rumored to roam the Earth— demons, wraiths, the undead, vampires. What if they are not just the stuff of legend? What if there is a scientific basis for their existence? There’s a secret lab in the basement of the prestigious Buchanan Medical Center, where the newly declared dead become subjects in pathologist Gunter Mueller’s research in cutting-edge resuscitation medicine. None of his subjects have survived—until now. Not only is he alive, Nick Chandler has undergone a chilling metamorphosis into a man of supernatural prescience, superhuman strength, and absolutely no remorse—as Chip Allison and his friend Kristin Duffy quickly discover. Chip is on duty as monitor watcher in the ICU when Chandler is wheeled in; mere minutes later, Chandler has fled into the night, leaving behind a violently murdered nurse, the first of many victims. Besides being an avid dog lover, Kristin has an interesting hobby: she takes Kirlian photographs—images of the auras all living creatures give off. When she applies the technique to a photo of Chandler inadvertently captured on the night of his escape, Chandler has no aura. And somehow, Chandler knows she has that damning photograph… Still suffering flashbacks after being attacked by his former boss wielding a bone saw three years ago, anesthesiologist Doug Landry is teaching residents at the Buchanan Med Center during a six-month sabbatical when his wife Laura is seriously injured in a biking accident. When things go terribly wrong on the operating table, Laura is delivered to Dr. Mueller for resuscitation…

The Right Kind of Stupid

Cody Latour is a naïve, directionless man-child. He seems nothing like his distant, CEO father or his eccentric grandfather, a former oil tycoon and full time legend. Cody’s small world consists largely of drinking by the pool with his dysfunctional friends: a red-neck diesel mechanic, a preachy mall kiosk owner, and a scrubby, mysterious drug dealer. He seems set to live out his days inside an isolated bubble of empty comforts. Then his charismatic grandfather dies, upending the delicate balance of Cody’s non-starting life and propelling him out into the world on an impossible mission.
Cody hesitantly takes up the challenge, but is dogged along the way by those determined to see him fail, including Monica, his late grandfather’s young and scheming third wife, and Tagg, the hostile bully that has been fixated on him since childhood.
To complicate things, Cody immediately falls for Kelly, the executor of his grandfather’s will. She tries to help him at times, but is legally bound from anything romantic. His bumbling attempts to woo her appear to have about as much hope of succeeding as he does at his grandfather’s challenge: Slim to none.
That is…until Cody meets Winton, a dwarf and struggling, small-time illusionist with a chip on his shoulder and nothing to lose. With his help, Cody presses forward in the shadow of the huge life his grandfather led, in his own immature and socially awkward way. But faced with enemy after enemy, obstacle after obstacle, his struggle begs the question: does he have what it takes? Is he the right kind of stupid?
This comedic, coming-of-age tale is a light-hearted and booze-soaked romp through Texas, perfect for summer reading. Much like the state of Texas, it contains some coarse language and plenty of social taboos.
