This morning I am taking Junebug to visit with a dog trainer and have an evaluation done. We met already once at a puppy orientation class, so the trainer has already met and fallen in love with Junebug. Truth be told I have never actually taken any of my pups to a dog training class, so this will be very new for me. I never needed my dogs to sit or stay, that’s what a leash is for. I have also never owned such a small dog, and raising a small dog is a complete mystery to me. The potty training, which is going horribly, so far has been the most challenging. I am really hoping the trainer can help me with this. So much pee….oh my…sooooo much pee.

Laws of man don’t exist anymore. The law of nature is the only rule. There is no punishment for those who prey on the weak and unprepared. There are no consequences for taking a life.
Out there on the road what people carry on their backs or in their pockets is more valuable than their lives. It’s easier to steal from the dead. It’s just the way things are now.
When I escaped Atlanta after the power died, I thought the only way I would survive was to be on my own. I was wrong. I did survive long enough to find them – to find her. They gave me a reason to keep fighting. They gave me a place to call home. When you have something worth taking, others will come for it. They always come for it.
We have to leave our town in order to save it. We have to leave the ones we love in order to protect them. We will be the punishment. We are the consequences.

On the morning of her release from prison, the hottest day on record in England, Janice Bailey makes her way to a boarding house in London, and discovers a bizarre new world.
This moving collection of linked short stories begins with ‘When Janice Bailey Walked’, an award-winning story first published in the Connecticut Review, and continues with six more stories as told by the eccentric residents of Number 17, London Road, thus illuminating a little-known side of the most beautiful city in Europe.
During the course of one day, we meet Bitty, a college drop-out now working in an antique shop, waiting nervously in an Italian restaurant to find out if her American boyfriend is about to dump her. And Nora, the landlady of the boarding house, a romance novelist obsessed with the Queen, who finds herself hotly pursued by Len, landlord of the local pub. Then there’s Anna, Nora’s teenage daughter, waiting all alone at netball camp because her mother, otherwise engaged, has forgotten to collect her, and Isobel, daughter of a Shakespearean actress, in the aftermath of a crisis. Finally there’s Mandy, who must choose between a life of crime or an alternate path.
