Beekeeping sounds like such a fun and delightful hobby. People picture sweet little bees buzzing around, looking all cute and fuzzy. They picture beautiful comb filled with lots of delicious honey. That is the exact opposite of the experience I am having right now with our bees. Last March, as some of you may remember, I caught around ten swarms. I was filling up the bee boxes with colonies faster than I could set the boxes up. I was feeling like I was THE QUEEN BEE. My hope was that, of the eleven or so colonies, I would have at least six make it through Winter. Then the fires struck, and the smoke in the air was so thick it was impossible to even go outside. When were able we realized we had lost most of the colonies and the deserted boxes were infested with wax moths. Not a drop of honey will be tasted this year. Today I will be cleaning out the boxes and killing a bunch of disgusting wax moth larvae. GROSS! On the bright side though we still have one strong colony, a sweet smaller colony that just wont give up, and the other day we found a little swarm under one of the abandoned boxes. We will do what we can for these last guys and try again next Spring.
