Today I am going to sneak out and brave a trip to the mall. I am going to fuel up on coffee and cookies and dust off my running shoes. Maybe say a prayer as well.

He’s gotta earn his wings . . . again.

Love Detail’s favorite angel has his sights set on his next target: the stoic and mysterious Noble Blackfeather. And it just may prove to be his toughest case yet. Noble’s reclusive ways keep his angel at wing’s distance, and love even further. But he’s not playing a part—he’s truly masking a painful secret and a profoundly wounded heart.

A cupid’s worst nightmare.

Noble’s been paired with Braelyn Campbell, the cute single mother next door. She’s adorable, friendly, fun . . . everything Noble needs. This should be a Love Squad slam dunk. Except she’s making a fresh start in Texas to protect her son from a volatile ex, and she’s not about to risk her heart or her son on another man. Even if he’s sexy as sin and always coming to her rescue.

Thank God for possibilities.

But, reluctantly, they are drawn together—thanks to their cupid’s dogged efforts and a whole lotta chemistry. Can the girl next door learn to trust again and help heal Noble’s wounded heart? Together, can they save the lost, hurting boy she’s raising? Can the angels help it happen before it’s too late?

Thank God for love.

Turning Tuscan: A Step-by-Step Guide to Going Native

Genre: Travel

This is a story about what it’s like to fall in love with Tuscany in your mid-life years, to buy a home there, to change around your work, and, finally, to leave the San Francisco Bay Area and move with your wife and children to a tiny Tuscan village. That’s the first part. The second part tries to share what it’s like living here once you’ve made the move: learning the language, becoming part of a village community, running a tour company, understanding the political scene, getting an internet connection, enjoying Renaissance art, spending time in the hospital, appreciating the bureaucracy, and enduring customer service at The Phone Company.

I’ve tried to write it all in a way that will make you feel like an honored guest invited into the cockpit as we transfer from America to Tuscany and set up shop. And, in case you’re wondering what kind of crazy person does such a thing, and whether you might be one, I try to share enough personal history and detail about our lives on both sides of the ocean to satisfy your curiosity.

As a foreigner who enters into another culture, there’s a limited window of time available to you to see these things and to try to record them in some way.You have to become Italian enough to play the game, but not so Italian yet that it all becomes invisible. If you wait too long, you are no longer in a position to reflect or comment on cultural differences because what people are doing seems totally normal to you.

Ripeness is all, as the poet said, and hopefully I’ve managed to capture for you some of the subtler aspects of living here that travel photos, even high resolution ones, can never reveal.

Fade Route (Burnside Mysteries)
David Chill
4.7 Stars (15 Reviews)
Genre: Mystery, Thriller & Suspense

FREE for a limited time

A local politician is murdered and there’s one obvious suspect. But everything seems too cut and dried for Burnside’s taste. While the police quickly pinpoint a likely culprit, Burnside — the former USC football star turned private eye –pushes forward into an investigation that reveals more and more possible suspects, all with their own motives. With little more to go on than his gut feeling, Burnside pokes at everything around him as he tries to untangle a web of deceit that threatens to take down an entire community.

The story is set on the outskirts of Los Angeles, in a seaside town that is both serenely gorgeous and brutally stark. It is a community that is home to the very rich and the very poor, a place that contains more than its share of wealth, sin, beauty and despair.

Fade Route is the second book in the Burnside series, a worthy follow up to David Chill’s acclaimed first novel, Post Pattern. A sharply crafted story, Fade Route combines all the elements of a classic murder mystery with biting humor and numerous plot twists. It is a page turner that will keep you guessing until the jaw dropping climax reveals an ending that is both surprising and satisfying.

Thomas Watson left London two years ago and crossed the Atlantic to become a newspaper reporter in Philadelphia 1920s Philadelphia, a city that rivals Al Capone’s Chicago for its crime and corruption. Why would he go so far from family and friends? Admittedly, he was trying to get away – away from the shadow of his famous father, Dr. John Watson, and his father s even more famous friend, Sherlock Holmes.

Shortly after Thomas leaves London, Sherlock dies, and Dr. Watson takes on the responsibility of caring for Sherlock’s older brother, Mycroft. After two short years in which Thomas finds little success in journalism, Dr. Watson dies suddenly; though Thomas stands to inherit his father’s estate, he is also saddled with the responsibility of Mycroft, who has mysteriously shown up in Philadelphia, ready to move in. Puzzled by this strange turn of events, Thomas takes a walk and suddenly finds himself caught up in the biggest story of his career a suspicious explosion at a speakeasy, which kills the owner and his card-playing buddies.

The principal suspect of the police is Basil Meridan, a former British butler whom Thomas befriends and Mycroft hires as a servant. Needled into making a bet with a rival reporter that he can solve the mystery, Thomas is immediately hampered in his investigation by his editor, who fires him for spending too much time on a dead-end story. As he attempts to recover from this setback, he is escorted against his will to a meeting with bootlegger Boo Boo Hoff and his goons. They also want to know who the killer is, and provide their own unique encouragement for Thomas to find the solution to the mystery. All this makes it necessary to for him to solve the mystery, or lose his money, his job, maybe even his life. From the scanty clues that Thomas compiles, Mycroft is able to solve the mystery, but he is tight-lipped about the solution after all, Thomas should be able to figure it out himself! But can Thomas discover the murderer before he becomes his next victim?

Too Ambitious
Susan Overby Swanson
5.0 Stars (4 Reviews)
Genre: Contemporary Fiction

FREE for a limited time

This novel is an uplifting, multilayered portrait of a group of individuals, most of whom are new to the Louisiana river road community. There’s the “passing” African-American beauty in search of a fair shake. There are the underpaid, underprivileged construction workers. There’s their greedy boss and his conniving architect. Add to that the lonely, regret-filled Cuban who’s lost all that ever mattered and the feisty, seemingly silly sixty-two year-old who quibbles with a husband who’s gambling on the sly while they’re building a home in the tiny historic town, and the pot begins to boil. Personal, social, and ethical concerns arise. Ripe with both the quaintness and strangeness of the river road, the story is essentially a mystery about why a state legislator and doctor – antecedent, too, of the passing African-American — was killed in a duel where the friend he’d chosen for a second insisted on the second shot that killed him. Just as mysterious is the doctor’s wife who, playing organ in the church in front of which the duel took place, finished Mass though told her husband was dying. Based on a real-life 1874 duel in St. James Parish, this tender, moving story is about race, guilt, and history.
