The Price of Freedom series stands at four books so far and has sold thousands of copies, but author Chris Northern is cursed with originality and just can’t help writing other stories. For example, the world ends not with a bang but with a straitjacket in the Dancing with Darwin stories, where humanity struggles against serious competition for the position of apex predator first time while also fighting their own unique mental disorders. And Just for fun Space Opera in Loser’s Flight, cowboys in space. Enjoy!

My name is Sumto, and everyone thinks I am a gambling, lazy, good-for-nothing drunk. Frankly, I think they have a point. Right now I may have to join the army and fight in a war I am frankly too corpulent to cope with.

Still, it looks like being a small, short war. So that’s got to be as bad as things get. Am I right?

Trained in his youth for war and politics, Sumto is interested in neither. As the son of a Patron, he should gather clients, acquire wealth, learn magic, husband a political power base and take his place amongst the Assembly of Patrons, the rulers of the city. Sumto would rather gather friends, acquire books, learn history, husband a hangover and take his place at the gambling tables. That is not going to be an option for much longer.

Unknown to Sumto, everything is about to change. There is a war in the north and Sumto is about to become a very unwilling participant.

Most humans must died, he decided. He was not human and did not think in human ways. He called himself Rhamno Nem after some thought on the matter.

His intent was to make a world on which his selected peoples could establish themselves without being overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of the native species. A good number of humans would have to die quite rapidly, he decided. It wouldn’t take much; if they were not sane they would not make rational decisions and would for the most part eliminate themselves. He estimated that by the time a new stability had been reached, five or six billion humans would have died. He viewed it more as a massive extinction event than genocide. Rhamno Nem had a rather different perspective of life than most sentient creatures. He held rather more of a dispassionate and long term view of things. For his own species’ to be assured survival he had to spread their genomes throughout the Galaxy, on every habitable planet encountered. To achieve that, such planets must be adjusted in whatever manner seemed necessary. Here, there were simply far to many of the indigenous intelligent species, far too much competition and already technologically advanced. Most of them would have to go. But he would make preparations to be sure it was not all. He was not a monster, after all. He didn’t mind humanity existing – in fact he would help the species survive in the long term in many subtle ways – it’s just that their current numbers were an inconvenience.

They knew about survival of the best adapted and had a fairly good theory of evolution; it had been a while, but it was time for humanity to once more become involved in a dance for survival.

After making his preparations, he triggered the nanovirus that would ensure that humanity, no longer sane, would tear itself apart.

While Dana is working to save the rainforests, someone else is working to end the world. When it all hits the fan, Dana seeks refuge with the last person on earth she would have believed possible – her new friend in the oil industry.

Evolving Environment is the third story to be released of a series of many parts, collectively known as Dancing with Darwin. Evolving Environment is approx 11,850 words (Maybe 33 print pages).

The Dancing with Darwin stories can be read in any order.
