There is just no making me happy. I was complaining before about the butterfly and humming bird garden that just wasn’t growing. Now I have a new problem. It grew so much I cannot get through the yard without almost crawling on my hands and knees. There is actually a doggy tunnel that my pup made to get to his part of the yard. I certainly am enjoying all the birds it has attracted though. My yard it quite popular. Oddly I have not really seen any butterflies and only one humming bird shows up, but I will still call this a success!

When a family looking to escape the corporate pressures and gas shortages of a crowded 1979 Houston makes a break for Hardrock, Colorado — a tiny town supporting a winter population of less than a dozen — what could they possibly hope to find?

Adventure! And outfitting the neglected Quartz Creek Inn with an operational cafe, saloon, trading post and motel in preparation for a hectic summer tourist season is where the story of Hardrock begins. Hardrock’s pronounced lack of amenities, unforgiving conditions and well-defined, likeable characters set the stage for hilarious situations in a primitive place where people make up the happily out-populated minority. Languishing behind America’s modern culture, Hardrock’s pace is decidedly slow – some might even say stunted. But, at the end of this county road, life is yours for the shaping. Ex-lawmen and outlaws, hippies, cowboys and mountain men and women all add spice to an eclectic recipe for retro-lunacy. Join the handful of Hardrock locals in the remote wilderness of the Colorado Rockies, where 14,000-foot peaks and the rustic setting of the Quartz Creek Inn conspire to provoke memorable misadventures and might just inspire you to stay.

A foreman is murdered driving through a mob of striking coal miners, and two union men are promptly arrested, causing a small mountain community to be torn apart as the public takes sides and a union fights for its survival. One reporter, however, soon suspects that something more devious is at play than random labor violence.

Jeremiah’s Scrapbook is the story Carol, a reporter who abandons a successful career with a major national newspaper to return to her southern West Virginia home seeking the home she never knew. Arriving to cover a UMWA strike for the local paper, however, she finds little has changed, and as the stand-off turns violent her loyalties are challenged as both sides view her with suspicion and derision. Jeremiah, her harshest critic, is a stubborn and acerbic retired miner who sets off an escalating war of words despite the fact that his grandson, Matthew, latches onto Carol to fill the void of his mother’s death—Jeremiah’s only child. Yet when Carol begins to suspect a powerful coal company is hiding an explosive secret, her search for the truth threatens to end her career and perhaps her life. Suddenly a reluctant Jeremiah finds himself her only remaining ally.

In the town of Tandumtoo, someone forgot to say ‘Thank you.’ Eh gad! It seems to be an unwritten law in Tandumtoo to respond to any kindness by saying ‘Thank you.’ That means when someone does something nice for you, or says something nice to you, or offers to help you, and especially when someone gives you something. And that was the case here when one of the residents, Willy Saladheimer, gave a newcomer to town one of his tandumberries and the man did not say ‘Thank you.’ Oh the ruckus this started!

Naturally, as in all good children’s stories the situation was put right. The newcomer simply had a different point of view on the subject of gift giving and a different take on The Golden Rule. 30 delightful illustrations included.
