A dead nun, a smart reporter, a stunning climax. Equal parts smart and smartass, reporter Leah Nash is rarely at a loss for words. But when she receives a cryptic message from a nun asking for help, just hours after the woman’s body is pulled from the river, Leah is stunned. The dead woman was on staff at DeMoss Academy, a residential school for troubled kids run by an order of Catholic nuns. Leah’s self-destructive younger sister Lacey had died there five years earlier. The nun’s note and an old newspaper clipping attached to it propel Leah into a search for the truth about her sister’s “accidental” death. But it’s a mystery no one wants her to pursue. Not her publisher, who orders her to stop making waves. Not the director of DeMoss Academy, who’s concerned about the school’s reputation. Certainly not the politician’s wife worried about Lacey’s connection to her husband. As Leah starts closing in on the real story behind her sister’s death, someone starts closing in on her…

A broad picture of the Holocaust from the point of view of a child. This book is a memoir of a child who is swept into the whirlwind of the Holocaust. The epic history is narrowed down to the struggle of a single boy nicknamed Leosz to survive the war. From age 7 to age 13, he endures all the horrors that the Holocaust brings upon the Jewish people. Life hangs on split-second timing, decision-making in impossibly cruel circumstances, incredible resourcefulness, luck and the help of others, even Germans. In the Krakow Ghetto, Leosz is saved from three mass deportations to the death camps. He escapes the ghetto, survives for several weeks pretending to be a Polish street child, and then goes into hiding. Although sentenced to die after being caught, he is instead miraculously reunited with his family in the Plaszow labor camp. A year later, father and son become slave laborers in the Gozen 2 camp in Austria, where his father perishes. Close to death himself, Leosz is finally liberated by the American army on May 5th, 1945.

The Death of Death
K. N. Parker
4.5 Stars (105 Reviews)
Genre: Fantasy | Children’s eBooks

FREE for a limited time

Death guides usually have rather normal names like John, Mary, Harry, and Jessica. And even ones not quite so normal, like Bartholomew or Ambrosia. They also have the most interesting tales behind their deaths. But one particular death guide has a few problems: she cannot remember her name or the details of her demise, and thus has no story of her own. One fateful night, she meets a young girl that may change her death forever. Inspired by the works of Tim Burton and Neil Gaiman, and in the style of Children’s tales of old, The Death of Death is a tragic, yet sweet little tale about loss and acceptance.
