Here we are on the Thursday before Halloween, and while I should be panicking about getting all supplies needed for the Halloween party this weekend, I’m not. I’m not stressed out because Halloween is on Monday. I have ALL weekend to set it up and cook. It’s not like I was busy all week and had a party planned on a Friday or Saturday. Nope. It’s on a Monday. I am getting a bit antsy about it. I think I will set out all the bowls and platters and put the food, still sealed in the packaging, in the bowls. For the cooked items I put a sticky note as a place holder. I always love doing that just in case I am falling behind in set-up, I can ask whoever is there to set the food out and they know exactly where everything goes. Halloween is my time to shine, and I am loving the extra time I have for once.

Welcome to Witch Haven. Where nothing is quite what it seems.

I’m back in the last place I want to be. A place where my magic went rogue, and people died. Witch Haven should be a haven, but I messed that up big time.

I have no friends to help me. No family left. And not even a witch’s familiar to keep me on the right path.

Magic used to flow through me, but now I’m a lone witch, drained of power and hoping I can sneak into Witch Haven, clear up the mess my stepmom left behind, and get out alive.

If the villagers find out I’m here, I’ll be hunted down. If the Magic Council catch me using anything more powerful than a light spell, I’ll go back to jail. And if my guilt doesn’t choke me, the gnomes will.

So yeah. Home sweet home never felt so unwelcoming.

My name is Malcolm. I used to think it was MmmMalcolm. I used to stutter back then, back when Mummy died and everything changed. Now I don’t stutter.
This is my story.
I always wanted regular boys’ shoes. Brown. Mine were always black boots, and one boot was made especially for my gimpy leg. Now I have regular men’s shoes. Brown. I have learned to talk again and to write. I used to. When I was at school. When I was ‘bright’. I remember that as clear as the day I fell into the goldfish pond. I was showing Julie the goldfish. One day something bad happened. Then it went dark. And I was back in the mental hospital up the hill from the little railway station where my father and Bella left me.
I don’t know why I ended up back there. I thought I would live forever in the little house with my new friends. Funny things happened there, at the mental hospital, like when they buried all those cats, or like when they shaved everyone’s heads. Some things were funny for a while, and then they weren’t.
I learned to be quiet and watch everyone and everything. I learned to keep my memories safe. If I lost them, would I become like the others? I kept my memories as safe as the little colored pills in my jacket lining.
I needed my memories of Mummy and Julie to give me hope…
This is my story.

Genre: Humor & Entertainment | Foreign Languages | Biographies & Memoirs

FREE for a limited time

The 2012 Paralympic Games are still six years away but already the sixty-five year old Terry Ravenscroft is putting together a team for the Throwing the Zimmer (Walking) Frame competition – should such an event be included. And when he has time to fit it in, of course. For this is a man who has many other diversions to fill his waking hours (of which he has more to fill than most people, thanks to the troublesome prostate gland that wakes him up in urgent need of a pee a least six times every night ). Stairlift to Heaven, the journal of an old age pensioner, is an irreverent, hilarious look at one man’s life after retirement. Although written by an old age pensioner, non-coffin dodgers should not be put off by this. Everyone will be old one day, and there are many valuable lessons in coping with advancing age to be learned within its pages (including the aforementioned prostate gland problem and the countless bladder examinations it brings with it); you will learn how to cope with increasing forgetfulness; how to become adept at dealing with junk mail; how not to go about capturing a Christmas goose; how to deal with the increasing forgetfulness… sorry, I forgot, I already mentioned that; discover why you might be well advised to avoid swimming lessons; why you would do well to give faith healers the widest of wide berths; learn how to deal with neighbours from hell; along with many more tips to help you through the minefield that comes with old age. But most of all you will learn how you can have lots of FUN whilst you’re doing it.
